John Muir Middle School Celebrates Japanese Cultural Day
On Friday, September 20, 2024, we will have our annual Japan Day at John Muir Middle School in Burbank, held since 2013. The event is funded by the kind parents of the John Muir Fundraising Committee (JMFC). This includes the Muir Monument Club, a project that will have students working with Japanese artist Masaji Asaga who will help the students design and carve a granite boulder from hills above Muir (donated and delivered by City of Burbank Public Works!) to serve as a monument of peace for 1,000 years.

Asaga-san’s carving project and materials were funded in part by the Burbank Arts & Education Foundation.
Since 2013, Rebun High School has been visiting JMMS in collaboration with Rebun International Exchange Program, directed by Dr. Agishi, CEI.
Muir’s Japan Day encompassed two objectives at Muir:
- Welcoming Japanese students and teachers from Rebun, (Official Link) the northernmost island in Japan. The island’s fishing industry was negatively affected by rising sea temperatures, and this exchange program was created to encourage families to stay on the island by giving students the opportunity to learn abroad and take their knowledge and experience back to Rebun. Muir families also host the students in their homes.
- A cultural appreciation day for students of Muir.
